show full program Where does this music come from? Flamenco is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, and also having historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia.[1][2][3] In a wider sense, the term is used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage.

Dance Workshop: Flamenco y Sol!

 —  —

Brooklyn Heights Library, 286 Cadman Plaza West , Brooklyn, NY 11201

Flamenco y Sol presents an interactive lecture-demonstration that brings audiences inside the world of flamenco through live dance, music, and storytelling. Rooted in the cultural traditions of Andalucía, Spain, the program introduces the essential elements of flamenco—cante (song), baile (dance), and toque (guitar)—while exploring its influences from Spanish, Roma, Arabic, and Jewish cultures. The experience begins with a short live performance, followed by a guided introduction to flamenco’s rhythms, structure, and expressive language. This program includes audience participation, inviting attendees to engage directly through palmas (rhythmic hand clapping), simple movement exercises, and basic flamenco technique. Part performance, part lecture, and part mini class, it offers an accessible and dynamic way to experience flamenco from the inside. Participants are encouraged to explore rhythm, coordination, and emotional expression, discovering how flamenco communicates feelings such as joy, strength, and intensity through the body and music. The program concludes with a final performance and an optional Q&A, creating space for connection, reflection, and shared experience.
